Benjamin Walker has been cast as the lead in HBO pilot “The Missionary.”
The actor, who recently toplined summer pic “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter,” is a known commodity at the pay cabler, having landed the role in the upcoming telepic “Muhammad Ali’s Greatest Fight.”
In spy drama “The Missionary,” from writer Charles Randolph, Walker will play an American missionary who gets caught up in Cold War intrigue while helping a young woman escape East Berlin.
Pilot is being exec produced by Randolph, Stephen Levinson, author Malcolm Gladwell and Mark Wahlberg.
Icelandic director Baltasar Kormakur is helming the pilot. His bigscreen pic “The Deep” is the country’s entry in this year’s Oscar race for foreign-language films.
The pay cabler’s other hot drama pilot right now is “Criminal Justice,” which stars HBO vet James Gandolfini. It’s based on a 2008 BBC series.
