Asian Pitch selects docu projects

'Sorrowgacy,' 'Defector,' 'Towels,' 'Sailors' to be backed

TOKYO — The 6th Asian Pitch, the annual event sponsored by Singapore’s MediaCorp, pubcasters NHK in Japan and KBS in Korea, selected four documentary projects by new talent for production support.

The winners, winnowed from nearly 100 submissions and a short list of nine, are Ishani K. Dutta’s “Sorrowgacy,” about the struggles of surrogate mothers in his native India; Lee Kil Do’s “Defector,” about the hard lives of North Korea defectors in South Korea; Akanksha Sood’s “Sanitary Towels Inc.,” about the inventor of a cheap, much-needed sanitary pad machine in India; and Taiwanese helmer Huo Ning’s “Wheatfield Sailors,” about two farm boys’ life-changing journey to the ocean.

The nine short-listed helmers were flown to Singapore to make their pitches to an industry panel.

The four winners will have their docus fully funded by the sponsors, with international releases skedded for next summer.
