Humane Society kudos fete productions that tackle animal issues

“Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” “The Colbert Report,” “Hawaii 5-0″ and “20/20″ were among the animal-friendly winners Saturday at the 26th annual Genesis Awards, presented by the Humane Society to films and TV shows that raise awareness of animal issues.

Fox’s “Apes” revival won the top feature award. CBS’ “5-0″ and Comedy Central’s “Colbert Report” won the drama and comedy series trophies, with “Colbert” taking its second consecutive win.

Syndie yakker “Ellen,” PBS’ “Sid the Science Kid,” NBC’s “Nightly News” and “Today” and Nickelodeon’s “Nick News with Linda Ellerbee” were also among the TV winners.

Ceremony, held Saturday at the Beverly Hilton, was hosted by Carrie Ann Inaba and featured a guest appearance by Uggie, the canine star of “The Artist.”
