'2012' helmer to direct net's first drama pickup
pilot pickup for the Alphabet going into the 2012-13 season. Set in New York City, the story is set against the backdrop of the presidential race of 2012, when a young astrophysics student learns his destiny lies not in science but somewhere between heaven and hell. The project comes under Gordon’s first-look deal with ABC Studios, which was signed last April. Emmerich, who will direct the pilot, wrote the script with Harald Kloser. The two last collaborated on theatrical “Singularity,” which Sony halted production on late last year. Executive producers are Emmmerich through his Centropolis Entertainment shingle, Kloser, Gordon and Nicholas Pepper. ABC has already made a pair of pilot pickups on the comedy side including a Dan Fogelman script on aliens living in the suburbs and “The Manzanis,” a multi-camera half-hour starring Kirstie Alley.
