Series will focus on Boston family in working-class 'hood

A&E is heading to Beantown with “Southie Rules.”

At its upfront on Wednesday, the cabler will announce a reality series order from Powderhouse Prods. and Magilla Entertainment that follows a South Boston family as they battle the relentless gentrification of their neighborhood. Working-class Southie has been examined on the bigscreen in pics such as “Gone Baby Gone” and “Mystic River.”

The tight-knit Southie clan in the series endure personal struggles while trying to keep their neighborhood true to its roots.

Show will be exec produced by Seanbaker Carter, Joel Olicker, Tug Yourgrau, Brian Flanagan, Matt Ostrom, Laura Palumbo Johnson, David McKillop, Elaine Frontain Bryant, Drew Tappon and Fred Grinstein. A&E has not specified the show’s episode order.

In a similar scenario, TLC is currently developing “Southie Pride.”

As part of the upfront, which will also include sister nets History and Lifetime, A&E prexy Bob DeBitetto will address the net’s focus on delivering more original programming than many of its cable competitors. By 2013, A&E’s primetime lineup will be filled with all original programming and no off-network acquisitions.

Current top-rated series for A&E are reality skeins “Storage Wars” and “Duck Dynasty.”
