TV Acad honors shows with conscience

Denis Leary, Ray Romano awarded

Denis Leary was in good spirits at the TV Academy Honors soiree May 2 at the Beverly Hills Hotel, even though he’s not exactly a kudos magnet.

“I don’t ever win awards. We were 0-8 at the Emmys,” said Leary, who was on hand with “Rescue Me” co-creator Peter Tolan. “Only Michael J. Fox won (as a guest star), and that doesn’t count.”

The TV Academy Honors recognize programs that have a “conscience” and provide content that can inspire or change lives.

The gravitas of the affair, however, didn’t stop the laughs from coming. Ray Romano said if “Men of a Certain Age” hadn’t been canceled — the show was cited for its colonoscopy-themed episode — there were plenty of important topics to cover.

“We had many more medical issues we could write about,” Romano said. “I had an irritable bowel cliffhanger.”
