Rosi’s restored ‘Il caso mattei’ to screen at Venice

Gucci, Scorsese's Film Foundation fund work

Now in its second year, the Gucci Award for Women in Cinema aims not only to spotlight the contributions of women to the world of filmmaking but also to honor cinema’s past by funding film restoration.

This year’s pic selection, the Francesco Rosi-helmed “Il caso mattei” (1972), has undergone a 4K digital restoration and will premiere today at the 69th Venice Film Festival.

The restoration, conducted by the Cineteca di Bologna at L’Immagine Ritrovata Laboratory, was made possible through Gucci’s partnership with Martin Scorsese’s The Film Foundation, to which the fashion giant has donated over $2 million for restoration projects. Gucci also collaborated with Paramount Pictures and Museo Nazionale del Cinema di Torino on the project, with additional funding from Italian oil and gas supermajor Eni.

The restoration coincides with the film’s 40th anniversary and Rosi will receive the Golden Lion for lifetime achievement at Venice.

This is the seventh year that Gucci has contributed to film restoration, with highlights including Sergio Leone’s classic “Once Upon a Time in America” and Federico Fellini’s “La dolce vida.”

“It is a concrete way to provide young generations with the opportunity to see, in the best possible conditions, great masterpieces that have marked the history of cinema,” fest director Alberto Barbera said.
