“I’m not so sane myself, but no one is these days,” Penny Marshall admitted at her intimate soiree Sept. 19 at the Monkey Bar to celebrate her new book, “My Mother Was Nuts: A Memoir by Penny Marshall.”As if to demonstrate her nuttiness, Marshall sprayed herself down in the middle of the party with perfume. Said Marshall of her dance-instructor mom: “She lived in the cellar of the basement of the ballroom of the dancing school. That’s all she cared about. All the kids loved her but me.” Marshall did say she inherited something else from her mother. “We all got our sense of humor from her,” she recalled. “She was very sarcastic, which you had to learn, and as a little kid you don’t know that word or that term. So, after awhile you get it, and if it’s not coming in your direction, you’re very happy.” Well-wishers attending the cocktail party included Mariah Carey, John McEnroe, Lorne Michaels, Regis Philbin, Diane Sawyer and Barbara Walters.
