FX exex find success in specific sitcoms

Comedy Impact Report 2012: TV - John Landgraf, Eric Schrier & Nick Grad

Lately, FX laffers have hit their stride, thanks not only to the strong creative talent on each series, but also the trio of execs guiding the net’s various shows behind the scenes.

President John Landgraf, along with Eric Schrier, exec VP of FX Prods. and head of series development, and Nick Grad, exec VP or original programming, have worked together for nine years and emphasize a collaborative approach to each project.

Schrier says even though “we all have different points of view, we collectively know what FX is. We live and breathe the brand.”

FX has blossomed into a home for comedic quirkiness thanks to writers and execs who push boundaries that other nets would shy away from.

“If you’re in the broadcast TV business, you try to make something you want to be funny to a broad group of people, but you tend to be less specific,” Landgraf says. “What we find is rather than establishing a broad tone to aggregate an audience, you can aggregate a large audience by making something highly specific.”

In addition to “Louie” winning a writing Emmy for the net, FX’s other recent achievement was the creation of latenight original programming: “Brand X With Russell Brand” and “Totally Biased With W. Kamau Bell.”
