Writer Kay Cannon achieved an early career goal, just not in the way she expected.
“I had always wanted to work on a sitcom but I guess I should have been a little more specific,” she says. “I really wanted to perform and sort of fell into writing.”
Cannon performed as a member of “Second City Las Vegas” prior to landing a job writing for “30 Rock.” After signing a recent deal with 20th Century Fox Television, she’s now moving on to write for “New Girl” while developing a show of her own.
“Writing is just ideas put down on paper,” she says. “I didn’t really envision myself writing for other characters, but now it’s six years later and I’m doing it and I love it. And obviously, now it’s my career.”
Cannon still performs when she’s able — acting in an indie film last month, popping up in bit parts on “30 Rock” over the years — and she has her first feature credit, “Pitch Perfect,” starring Anna Kendrick and Brittany Snow, due out in October.
She and Tina Fey are developing a movie together about a real-life gay couple in Gotham who received misdelivered “Dear Santa” letters that they responded to.
But her most immediate concern is joining the “New Girl” team, which includes former “30 Rock” writers Dave Finkel and Brett Baer.
“I hate to use this term, but I’m the new girl on ‘New Girl,’ ” she says. “I haven’t been the new one in a while but I’m excited to see what other processes there are out there in terms of writing the show.”
