Stand up 2 Cancer blends comedy with message
Bizzers mingled with medical researchers and cancer survivors at Friday’s Stand Up 2 Cancer telethon held at the Shrine Auditorium.
The event’s blend of live performances, motivational messages from stars and tearjerker stories worked to create an experience both somber and lighthearted. Seth Rogen applied his raunchy humor when recalling an experience with a friend and cancer survivor: “I told him there are much easier ways to get a medical marijuana card in California,” Rogen quipped.
Samuel L. Jackson took a much more direct route, egging on men to put aside their egos and schedule a prostate exam. “Get your butts to the doctor — literally!” Jackson ordered. “If we all stand up to cancer, we can kick its ass so good.”
Katie Couric cracked a joke about the flavor of the colon cancer screening pre-cleanses. “Strawberry, chocolate — I believe Chelsea Handler even has one vodka-flavored!”
