Suzanna Makkos, senior VP of comedy development, Fox

Women's Impact Report 2012: Executives

Makkos, along with co-head of comedy development Marcus Wiley, was instrumental in the development of skeins like “Raising Hope” and “Bob’s Burgers,” but it’s this fall TV season that her hard work gets its primetime shine. Tuesday night is Fox’s first four-sitcom block in nearly a decade, packed with femme-centric laffers including “The Mindy Project,” “New Girl” and “Ben and Kate” — under the slogan “Laugh your Fox off.”

What we should know: “Making entertainment is a lot of work, and by a lot of people. I never realized the amount of coordination and organization that went into making my favorite TV shows … it’s such a massive undertaking for those 22 minutes of programming!”

Words of wisdom: “Read every script you can get your hands on. If something makes you laugh, you have to fight for it — that’s how you learn what your taste is.”

Work week: “This isn’t an hourly job, it’s really a lifestyle. I would say when I’m awake and not directly with my daughter, I’m working.”

Life-work balance: “It’s knowing when you just have to put your phone down. I had a boss once tell me that there’s no such thing as a TV emergency. It’s hard to remember, but it’s ultimately true — no one’s life is at stake.”

Charitable passion: “I work with Girls, Inc., an amazing afterschool mentoring program for girls ages 6-18. The program shows how such small amounts of encouragement can make a difference in someone’s life.”
