Stewart: Humor offers clarity pundits lack

Following its coverage of the infamously indecisive 2000 election, “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart” won a Peabody and set the bar for every presidential race since. By 2012, “The Daily Show” had become required viewing, using comedy to offer the clarity and perspective the news pundits often lack.

By maintaining his sense of humor when so many around him seem to have lost their sanity, Stewart is on track to have his biggest year ever in the 18-49 demographic, as “The Daily Show” leads the pack of all latenight shows. It averages 1.4 million in the demo, 2.5 million total.

Stewart, who’s been with the show since 1999, is quick to credit the cabal of talent who’ve come through the gates, including on-air correspondents Stephen Colbert, Steve Carell and Samantha Bee.

“I feel like the sixth grade teacher that’s always here. Classes come and classes go. Then, every once in a while, one of my students comes back. While they were there, they were like, ‘Wow, he’s the coolest teacher — he’s doing science experiments with Mentos and Diet Coke!’ Then they come back and they’re like, ‘Oh, you’re a loser.’?”
