Atwell, Sewell topline ‘Restless’

Sundance Channel co-produce wartime spy drama

The Sundance Channel is co-producing spy drama “Restless,” starring Hayley Atwell, Rufus Sewell, Charlotte Rampling and Michael Gambon.

The miniseries follows a woman who learns her mother was recruited by the British Secret Service during WWII to infiltrate the corridors of power in Washington, D.C., as the British attempt to swing the U.S. in favor of joining the war.

William Boyd penned the screenplay, based on his novel. It will be shot as two 90-minute episodes.

Edward Hall (“MI-5”) directs. Hilary Bevan Jones (“Girl in the Cafe”) and Paul Frift produce. Mini is being produced by U.K.’s Endor Prods; Sundance and Germany’s SevenOne Intl. co-produce.

“Restless” shoots in the U.K. and South Africa this summer and will air on the BBC and Sundance Channel in December.

The project continues Sundance Channel’s push into original scripted content. The net recently greenlit original series “Rectify.” Cabler is also producing “Top of the Lake” and nabbed Golden Globe and SAG noms for the scripted mini “Appropriate Adult.”

” ‘Restless’ is a compelling new tale of espionage, complete with fresh, arresting characters and surprise at every turn. That — along with the roster of talent associated with this production — makes ‘Restless’ a perfect addition to our original scripted programming lineup,” said Sundance Channel general manager Sarah Barnett. “We aim with our scripted work to create high-quality, engaging stories told from a singular point of view.”

Atwell previously appeared in “The Pillars of the Earth” and “Captain America: The First Avenger.”

Sewell appears in “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” and toplined miniseries “Pillars of the Earth.”
