‘Zindagi’ tops Indian fest

Zoya Akhtar's film nabs nine awards, including best pic, director, screenplay

LONDON — Helmer Zoya Akhtar’s “Zindagi na milegi dobara” was the big winner Saturday night at the Indian Film Academy awards, picking up nine honors including film, direction, story, screenplay, cinematography, editing, choreography, sound mixing and supporting actor for Farhan Akhtar.

The awards are held in a different international city each year to promote Indian film, and this year it was Singapore’s turn for the second time after 2004.

Ranbir Kapoor won for actor and A.R. Rahman (“Slumdog Millionaire”) for music and score for “Rockstar,” which also won for singing and lyrics. Vidya Balan won best actress for “The Dirty Picture,” which also won dialogue, costume and makeup. Parineeti Chopra nabbed supporting actress for “Ladies vs. Ricky Bahl.”

Veteran actor Rekha and helmer Ramesh Sippy were accorded lifetime achievement awards.

Liv Ullman, whose relationship with Ingmar Bergman is chronicled in Indian helmer Dheeraj Akolkar’s documentary “Liv and Ingmar” that screened during the awards weekend, was given an award for achievement in international cinema.
