U Republic recruits Sexton

Executive named exec VP of licensing and branding

Underscoring the increasing importance of licensing and nontraditional revenue streams in the record biz, Universal Republic/Island Def Jam has appointed Cynthia Sexton to serve in the newly created position of exec VP of licensing and branding.

Sexton is a newcomer to the Universal Music Group fold, having previously run her own branding and licensing agency, following stints at EMI Music and its imprint label Virgin. She will be based in Santa Monica, reporting to Universal Republic/Island Def Jam COO Ivan Gavin.

Sexton will oversee film and TV licensing as well as consumer branding partnerships for the labels’ artists.
