Grammy gang gets going early on festivities
The Grammy Week gallop begins in earnest Wednesday, as music biz pros dart from venue to venue to schmooze in the run-up to Sunday’s Grammy Awards show at Staples Center.
It’s a grueling job, but somebody’s gotta do it. Here’s a short list of the most glittery events:
Wednesday: The Recording Academy’s Producers & Engineers Wing fetes Interscope Geffen A&M chairman Jimmy Iovine at the Village Recorder in Westwood.
Thursday: Sharon Osbourne hosts the Grammy Foundation’s Music Preservation Project show at the Saban Theater. Mavis Staples, Robert Cray and Johnny Lang are headlining.
Friday: MusiCares Person of the Year bash honors Paul McCartney. The Recording Acad appears intent upon topping itself each year with this gig benefiting its charitable arm. Barbra Streisand took the stage last year, and the ticket is just as hot this year as Coldplay, Foo Fighters, Katy Perry, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Norah Jones, James Taylor and Neil Young & Crazy Horse are among those who will salute Macca.
Saturday: Clive Davis’ Pre-Grammy Gala & Salute to Industry Icons. If Grammy Week is about making the scene, this annual schmoozefest at the Beverly Hilton Hotel is the showstopper of pre-awards evenings. Sony Music Entertainment chief creative officer Davis has presided over the pre-Grammys function — now an official NARAS affair — for years. Virgin Group founder Richard Branson is this year’s honoree. Expect a parade of top talent and plenty of enthusiastic greetings from the loquacious host.
