'Just the Way You Are' named best song

Perennial hitmaker Max Martin was the man of the hour at Wednesday night’s 29th ASCAP Pop Music Awards, winning the performing rights org’s songwriter of the year honor at the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel.

The Swedish songwriter-producer was honored for a host of his tracks at the kudos dinner, which honored the songwriters and publishers responsible for the org’s most performed songs of the year. This year’s ceremony marked the fifth time Martin has been so honored, as ten of his song’s landed on the org’s most performed songs of the year list.

Bruno Mars’ “Just the Way You Are” was named song of the year, with plaques going to songwriters Mars, Ari Levine, Philip Lawrence, Khari “Needlz” Cain and Cassius D. Calb. There was a tie for the publisher of the year honor, with EMI Music Publishing and Warner/Chappell Music splitting the plaudits.

As previously announced, Carly Simon, Trent Reznor and Peter Frampton all received various lifetime achievement kudos. Simon, Dan Wilson and Natalie Maines performed, with Mars, Katy Perry, Ne-Yo and LMFAO among the bigger names onhand for the ceremony.
