Carrie Underwood set for ‘Sound of Music’

Country songstress to play Maria von Trapp

Country chantoosie Carrie Underwood has been tapped to play the lead role of Maria von Trapp in Peacock’s live “Sound of Music” telecast next holiday season, filling the shoes of Julie Andrews who played Maria in the 1965 feature film version of the musical.

“Speaking for everyone at NBC, we couldn’t be happier to have the gifted Carrie Underwood take up the mantle of the great Maria von Trapp,” said NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt. “She was an iconic woman who will now be played by an iconic artist.”

“Smash’s” Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, who are producing the program, stated: “Having Carrie Underwood as the star brings [‘Sound of Music’] to a new generation who will fall in love with it for the first time as many millions of people already have.”

Underwood is managed by XIX Entertainment and repped by CAA.
