Indie publisher adds Toto, Boz Scaggs' cleffer's catalog
Continuing to diversify its growing catalog, indie publisher Spirit Music Group has signed David Paich, a founding member of Toto and co-author of many of Boz Scaggs’ biggest hits.Multi-year deal will cover creative and administrative services for Paich’s entire back catalog and new works. With Scaggs (another Spirit cleffer), Paich penned the singer-guitarist’s massive ’70s hits “Lowdown,” “Lido Shuffle,” “What Can I Say” and “It’s Over,” from the multi-platinum 1976 album “Silk Degrees.” As a member of the studio-bred super-group Toto, Paich inked such hits as “Hold the Line,” “I’ll Supply the Love,” “99,” “Rosanna” and “Africa.” He also collaborated on such hits as Cheryl Lynn’s “Got to be Real” and George Benson’s “Lady Love Me (One More Time).” Paich has collected seven Grammys as songwriter, arranger and producer. Son of the late arranger Marty Paich, he has worked behind such acts as Steely Dan, the Doobie Brothers, the Brothers Johnson, Donna Summer and Don Henley. Earlier this year, Spirit Music acquired Who leader Pete Townshend’s catalog (Daily Variety, Jan. 25). It controls 40,000 copyrights, and owns or manages tunes by Lou Reed, T.
