Friday movie draws nearly 5 million; comedy nets 4.5 million

Girl vs. Monster” became the latest Disney Channel original movie to score big, drawing nearly 5 million viewers Friday night.

The pic, featuring “Kickin It” star Olivia Holt as a 15-year-old singer who discovers on Halloween that she’s a fifth-generation monster hunter, also delivered 2.8 million kids 2-11, 2.2 million kids 6-11 and 1.9 million tweens.

It was Friday’s No. 1 telecast (broadcast or cable) in all kids demos, peaking in its final half-hour with 5.6 million total viewers, including 3.2 million kids 2-11.

Disney Channel has enjoyed great success with its original movies. And with titles like “High School Musical” and “Camp Rock,” it could lay claim to the year’s most-watched cable TV movie from 2006 through 2011.

On Friday, “Girl vs. Monster” also helped provide a strong lead-in for new sitcom “Dog With a Blog,” which drew 4.5 million. In kids 2-11, its 2.6 million viewers makes it the year’s top-rated TV series launch.

“Dog With a Blog” debuts in its regular Sunday 8 p.m. timeslot on Nov. 4.
