Net's "25 Days" event draws record ratings

ABC Family’s stockings were stuffed this holiday season, as the net’s “25 Days of Christmas” wrapped at record ratings levels.

Nielsen estimates that this year’s event averaged 2.8 million viewers, up 17% vs. last year (2.4 million). “25 Days” also shot up vs. 2011 by 18% in adults 18-49 (1.3 million vs. 1.1 million) and by 15% in persons 12-34 (979,000 vs. 855,000).

The number of people watching at least some of the holiday event — which included an original movie and numerous airings of other traditional holiday faves — grew to 106.9 million this year, up from 101.3 million last year and the sixth consecutive year above 100 million.

The Dec. 2 airing of the 2006 feature film “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas” was cable’s No. 1 movie during the month in total viewers (6.35 million) as well as all of the net’s target 18-34, 18-49 and 12-34 demos.

Original movie “The Mistle-Tones” preemed Dec. 9 and was the night’s top-rated cable telecast in adults 18-34 (765,000), persons 12-34 (1.3 million) and other categories. And it ranks third among the original ABC Family pics to premiere during the “25 Days of Christmas” over the years.

Other programs included during the event included the network premieres of theatricals “Elf,” “Despicable Me” and the original “Home Alone” and airings of holiday chestnuts like “Mickey’s Christmas Carol,” “Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town” and “The Little Drummer Boy.”

The big showing during the 25 Days event has helped ABC Family log monthly and yearly highs across its core female demos of 18-34, 18-49 and 12-34. Net’s “Pretty Little Liars” was the calendar year’s No. 1 scripted cable series in femmes 12-34 (averaging 2.2 million).
