Authors to write screenplay for young adult action-thriller
Black Forest Film Group has acquired feature rights to the “Hunger Games”-esque novel “Quarantine: The Loners” by Lex Thomas, a pseudonym for authors Lex Hrabe and Thomas Voorhies, who will write the screenplay together.
“Loners” is the first book of a trilogy being released by Egmont USA this July.
Described as a cross between “The Warriors” and “Lord of the Flies,” action-thriller concerns the outbreak of a virus that is deadly to anyone after puberty. A typical American high school becomes a battleground after the military quarantines more than a thousand teens, who subsequently form violent gangs based on previously established social cliques. Instead of battling for popularity, the students must fight for survival. Protags are two brothers whose relationship is tested when a young girl threatens to come between them.
Black Forest founding partners Mark Morgan (“The Twilight Saga”), Kami Garcia (“Beautiful Creatures”), E. Thompson and Brett Hudson will produce with Rachel Miller and Jesse Hara of Tom Sawyer Entertainment.
Deal was brokered by Hrabe and Voorhies’ attorney Tara Kole of Gang, Tyre, Ramer & Brown, while Mollie Glick of Foundry Literary & Media sold the book rights.
Black Forest recently acquired Ransom Riggs’ spec script “Black River,” as well as film rights to bestselling author Garcia’s upcoming solo series that begins with “Unbreakable.”
Tom Sawyer previously produced Josh Radnor’s directorial efforts “happythankyoumoreplease” and “Liberal Arts.”
