Stage musical to premiere in the fall

Helmer Des McAnuff is getting his long-gestating stage version of “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots” off the ground with a world preem at the La Jolla Playhouse later this year.

McAnuff (“Jersey Boys”), whose revival of “Jesus Christ Superstar” recently began previews on Broadway, will write and direct the show based on the 2002 album by the Flaming Lips, the band led by frontman Wayne Coyne. Musical will incorporate songs not only from the “Yoshimi” album but from others by the band, including “The Soft Bulletin” and “At War With the Mystics.”

Plotline follows a young Japanese artist who fights evil marauding robots in a fantasy world. McAnuff has been toying with the idea of a “Yoshimi” musical for years; at one point Aaron Sorkin was said to be interested in writing the book.

“Yoshimi” is targeted for November and December, with dates to be announced.
