Whitewash leads to ‘Red’

John Logan play opens at the Mark Taper Forum

“Red has always been and still is my favorite color,” declared Jonathan Groff at Sunday’s opening-night party of the John Logan play at the Mark Taper Forum. “I find it in my ears, I find it in my fingernails and in my hair. It’s in every crevice of my body. Yet it’s still my favorite color.”

As for his method of prepping for “Red,” based on painter Mark Rothko, Groff said he perfected his style of painting during his youth. “I did a lot of whitewashing fences when I was growing up.”

Thesp also visited the Rothko Chapel in Houston to check out some of the artist’s murals. Meanwhile his co-star, Alfred Molina, was busy taking iPhone photos of Mark Rothko paintings at MOCA, where the afterparty was held.

Others checking out the artwork included Dustin Lance Black and Zachary Quinto.
