Sigourney Weaver in Chekhov reboot

New play by Christopher Durang at McCarter

Sigourney Weaver and David Hyde Pierce are set to star in the world premiere of ”Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike,” a new play by Christopher Durang opening this fall at the McCarter Theatre in Princeton and then moving to Lincoln Center Theater.

It’s directed by Nicholas Martin with thesps Genevieve Angelson, Shalita Grant, Billy Mangussen and Kristine Nielsen. Performances start Sept. 7. The play opens Sept. 14 and runs through Oct. 7.

It’s an update of the Chekhov classic, following brother Vanya (Hyde Pierce) and his stepsister Sonia (Nielsen) at their farmhouse in Bucks County, Pa. Weaver plays their movie-star sister who comes for a surprise visit.

McCarter’s 2012-2013 Theater season will continue with Elevator Repair Service’s production of ”The Select (The Sun Also Rises),” Edward Albee’s ”A Delicate Balance,” Shakespeare’s ”The Winter’s Tale” and Stephen Sondheim’s ”Into the Woods” as reimagined by Fiasco Theater.
