Shanley goes to ‘Church’

Esposito, Pinkins in Off Broadway cast

The latest play by John Patrick Shanley has a new title, “Storefront Church,” and a cast that includes Giancarlo Esposito, Tonya Pinkins and Zach Grenier.

Bowing at Off Broadway’s Atlantic Theater this spring, “Storefront Church” was previously called “Sleeping Demon.” Show is the third in a trilogy of plays that includes Shanley’s “Defiance” and Tony winner “Doubt.”

The playwright also will direct the production, in which Esposito stars as a Bronx borough president at odds with an area minister played by Ron Cephas Jones (“Hurt Village”). Pinkins (“Caroline, or Change”), Grenier (“33 Variations”) and Bob Dishy round out the cast.

Design team includes Takeshi Kata (sets), Alejo Vietti (costumes), Matthew Richards (lights) and Bart Fasbender (sound).

Production will be the first to play in the Atlantic’s newly renovated mainstage space. Show begins previews May 16 ahead of a June 11 opening.
