New York producers attached to Chicago play
Phylicia Rashad will helm a Chicago production of Paul Oakley Stovall’s play “Immediate Family,” with an attached team of producers eyeing the show for future life.
Paul Boskind (“Gore Vidal’s The Best Man,” “Priscilla Queen of the Desert”), Ruth Hendel and Stephen Hendel (“Fela!,” “American Idiot”) produce the show by special arrangement with Chi’s Goodman Theater and in association with the city’s About Face Theater.
Production is the latest legit helming outing for Rashad, who also staged “Gem of the Ocean” in Seattle and a production of “A Raisin in the Sun” that played a January stint at L.A.’s Center Theater Group. Cast includes Shane’sia Davis, J. Nicole Brooks, Patrick Sarb, Phillip James Brannon, Kamal Angelo Bolden and Cynda Williams.
Set in the Chicago neighborhood Hyde Park, storyline centers on a family reunion during which secrets are inevitably exposed.
“Immediate Family” begins previews June 2 ahead of press perfs set for June 8 and 9 at the Goodman’s Owen Bruner Theater. Limited run is set to play through July 8.
