Mia Michaels, choreographer

Women's Impact Report 2012: Creatives

Michaels made her mark on the public through her challenging routines on Fox’s hit series “So You Think You Can Dance” from 2005-10. Her distinctive choreography has earned her five Emmy nominations and two wins, as well as a devoted following, while her big personality also earned fans. Her routines are still used on the show. This year, she choreographed “Rock of Ages” and “Step Up Revolution.” She’s developing a reality show for the Weinstein Co. among other projects.

What we should know: “A great choreographer can make anyone look good, even if they have two left feet. Our job is to tailor the work to their strengths.”

Words of wisdom: “Stay true to your own voice and instincts, and be OK with being different. You don’t have to be anyone but who you are, you are perfect and unique and special, so define yourself.”

Life-work balance: “I’m a single woman alone. Love, passion, loss — I put everything into my work.”

Charitable passion: Make a Wish Foundation. A few weeks ago there was a girl who really wanted to connect. I recorded a message for her that her mother played for her during her final moments. I was able to make a difference in supporting her, to provide her a little comfort.”
