Downtown theater sets busy slate
A new play by Neil LaBute and another one directed by LaBute,are among the offerings set for the 2012-13 season at Off Off Broadway’s venerable downtown venue La MaMa.
LaBute teams with controversial Italian scribe Marco Calvani for a double-bill of one-acts presented under the heading “AdA (Author directng Author”). LaBute’s “Lovely Head,” helmed by Calvani, centers on a man bizarrely obsessed with a girl, while Calvani’s “Things of This World,” directed by LaBute, follows a woman and her butler as they prep for a dinner party. Production, which runs Sept. 14-Oct. 14 at LaMaMa, had its world preem earlier this year at Italy’s Spoleto Festival.
Also among the sixty international shows to be presented during the coming season are new outings from helmer-puppeteer Ping Chong and scribes Catherine Filloux and Sheila Callaghan, as well as a new Foundry Theater staging of Brecht’s “Good Person of Szechuan” toplined by downtown fave Taylor Mac.
