Cindi Lauper pens tunes for musical based on Miramax film

Kinky Boots” has locked in its Broadway berth, confirming a spring start at the Hirschfeld Theater.

Toplined by Stark Sands (“American Idiot”) and Billy Porter (“Angels in America”), “Kinky Boots” has already set a pre-Gotham tryout in Chicago for this fall. Annaleigh Ashford (“Dogfight”) is also among the thesps tapped to appear in 32-member cast.

Cyndi Lauper, in her first gig composing for the stage, pens the songs for the tuner with a book by Harvey Fierstein (“Newsies”). Storyline is based on the 2005 Miramax film about a drag entertainer (played by Porter in the tuner) who helps a young man (Sands) turn around the family shoe factory he has inherited.

Jerry Mitchell (“Legally Blonde”) directs and choreographs the show, which is produced by Daryl Roth (“Love, Loss and What I Wore”) and Hal Luftig (“Evita,” “Legally Blonde”).

“Kinky Boots” begins Broadway previews March 5 ahead of an April 4 opening. The musical’s run at Chicago’s Bank of America Theater is skedded to play Oct. 2-Nov. 4.

The Hirschfeld was recently vacated by the limited summer run of “Fela!” Theater also will host the upcoming holiday stint of “Elf” before “Kinky Boots” moves into the venue.
