Beach Boys musical to open in Vegas
The next jukebox tuner for “Rock of Ages” helmer Kristin Hanggi is “Surf the Musical,” the latest attempt to create a musical from the catalog of the Beach Boys.
Show is gearing up to begin previews next month at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Vegas. Storyline, penned by Burton Young, revolves around a 1960s SoCal beach community.
Hanggi, whose production of “Rock of Ages” has been running on Broadway for three years, has assembled a design team drawn from Rialto vets including set designer Beowulf Borritt (“The Scottsboro Boys”), lighting designer Howell Binkley (“Jersey Boys”), costume designer Gregory Gale (“Arcadia”) and projection designer Darrel Maloney (“American Idiot”). Choreography is by RJ Durell and Nick Florez.
A prior try at a Beach Boys musical, “Good Vibrations,” had a short-lived run on Broadway in 2005.
“Surf” is produced by Surf Prods., led by exec producers Michael Ingram, J. Burton Gold and Skip Klintworth. Show begins previews June 11 ahead of a July 17 opening.
