Actor joins cast of Capote adaptation
George Wendt has been tapped for a gig in the Broadway play adaptation of “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” joining a cast that includes Emilia Clarke and Cory Michael Smith in the lead roles.
Wendt, last on the Main Stem in the 2010 incarnation of “Elf,” will play Joe Bell, the proprietor of a bar near the Upper East Side brownstone where Holly Golightly, portrayed by Clarke (“Game of Thrones”), lives. Role was left out of the familiar 1961 film version of the story, which also updated the tale from the original WWII-era setting of the Truman Capote novella.
Wendt’s most recent stage outing was in the tuner version of “Re-Animator,” which played L.A., Gotham and Edinburgh earlier this year.
Written by Richard Greenberg and helmed by Sean Mathias, “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” begins previews March 4 ahead of a March 20 opening at the Cort Theater.
