Ahmanson winds up with Tony magnet
The Ahmanson’s opening of “Follies,” came on the heels of its eight Tony noms, which left the tuner’s cast and creatives in a celebratory mood May 9.
Center Theater Group’s Michael Ritchie performed a little dance to illustrate his happiness at the McCormick and Schmick afterparty downtown. The tuner was a late add to the Ahmanson’s lineup after “Funny Girl” fell out. Ritchie saw “Follies” on Broadway the night he got the news of losing “Funny Girl.”
“The fact that we ended up with the show was kismet,” said Ritchie. Victoria Clark replaces Bernadette Peters in the L.A. staging. There to witness the good fortune were Matthew Morrison, Cloris Leachman, Angela Bassett and James Van Der Beek. – — Shalini Dore
