“I had to tear myself away from a third reading of ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ for this,” quipped Jane Lynch, host of the 2012 Backstage at the Geffen gala.
By all accounts, it was worth the sacrifice. The event, held at the Geffen Playhouse in Westwood, drew an impressive collection of celebrities and industry types alike. The musical entertainment didn’t disappoint either, with Matthew Morrison belting out showtunes and Arturo Sandoval on the trumpet. Even Andy Garcia joined the fun, busting out a set of bongos to jam along with Sandoval’s band.
Dick Van Dyke presented the Distinction in Theater Award to Carol Burnett, and Warren Beatty gave Jim Gianopulos the Distinction in Service Award, joking, “I feel that his brilliant conservative business capacity in a clearly left-wing company like Fox makes him such an … inspired communist.”
