Sutton Foster and Andre De Shields are among the thesps who have joined the casts of the new tuners to be showcased at the National Alliance for Musical Theater’s annual Festival of New Musicals.
Two-time Tony winner Foster (“Bunheads”), along with Steel Burkhardt (“Hair”) and Kate Rockwell (“Bring It On”), are part of the cast of Ben Clark and Beth Turcotte’s bigtop tale “The Circus in Winter,” helmed by Matt Webb. De Shields, meanwhile, will play Guy Fawkes in “Bonfire Night,” Justin Levine’s take on the 1605 Gunpowder Plot.
Nancy Opel (“Urinetown”) has come aboard Jason Schafer, Arthur Lafrentz Bacon and Harris Doran’s post-apocalypse fairy tale “Bleeding Love,” while Bryce Ryness (“Hair”) will appear in two NAMT titles, “Sleeping Beauty Wakes” and “Triangle.”
The 24-year-old NAMT fest selects eight developing musicals to be presented, in 45-minute excerpts, to the org’s membership of legit producers and presenters from around the country. Past NAMT alums that have gone on to future life include “Thoroughly Modern Millie” and “The Drowsy Chaperone.”
The 2012 edition of the NAMT fest runs Oct. 11-12 at Off Broadway’s New World Stages.
