Play category favors Off Broadway slate

The Broadway revival of “Follies” and Off Broadway tuner “Death Takes a Holiday” led the nominations for the Drama Desk Awards, notching 10 noms each. New-fangled Gershwin musical “Nice Work If You Can Get It” scored eight.

Ricky Martin (“Evita”), Philip Seymour Hoffman (“Death of a Salesman”), Carey Mulligan (“Through a Glass Darkly”) and Kevin Spacey (“Richard III”) are among the thesp nominees.

In a Broadway season loaded with new plays, the Drama Desk’s play category leaned toward the Off Broadway slate, in part because several of the year’s Rialto contenders were previously eligible for noms in their original Off Broadway incarnations. Main Stem offerings “Chinglish” and “The Lyons” vie for the award against Off Broadway titles “By the Way, Meet Vera Stark,” “The Big Meal,” “Unnatural Acts,” “Completeness” and “Tribes.”

In the top tuner race, five Broadway shows — “Bonnie and Clyde,” “Leap of Faith,” “Newsies,” “Nice Work” and “Once” — square off with Off Broadway’s “Queen of the Mist” and “Death Takes a Holiday.”

“Follies” finds itself in the running for musical revival with fellow Rialto shows “Evita,” “Jesus Christ Superstar” and “Porgy and Bess,” with “Carrie” and “The Threepenny Opera” drawn from beyond the Main Stem. “Follies” also scored a trio of acting noms for Danny Burstein, Jan Maxwell, Bernadette Peters and Elaine Paige as well as nods for directing (Eric Schaeffer) and choreographer (Warren Carlyle), plus a couple of design categories.

Along with its top new musical nom, the haul for “Death Takes a Holiday,” a musical that bowed Off Broadway in a Roundabout Theater Company production, included noms for music and lyrics (both by Maury Yeston), book (Thomas Meehan and Peter Stone), directing (Doug Hughes), and acting nods for Kevin Earley and Matt Cavenaugh as well as design nominations.

The org’s award for ensemble performance will go to the cast of the Public Theater’s production of Richard Nelson play “Sweet and Sad.” Other special kudos will be given to thesp Mary Testa for body of work, including her lead perf in “Queen of the Mist”; actor Nick Westrate for his perfs in a trio of Off Broadway plays this season; scribe Stephen Karam, scoring the Sam Norkin Off Broadway Award for his well-received play “Sons of the Prophet”; and the New Victory Theater, for its sophisticated programming for all-ages auds.

Drama Desks, run by the eponymous org of legit critics and journos, are set to be handed out June 3 in a ceremony at Gotham’s Town Hall.
