Hytner, McDermott to helm London operas
Brit legit helmers Nicholas Hytner (“The History Boys,” “One Man, Two Guvnors”), Phelim McDermott (“Shockheaded Peter,” “Satyagraha”) and Richard Jones (“Anna Nicole,” “Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk”) return to the opera stage for the newly announced 2012-3 season at English National Opera (ENO), London’s English-language opera house.
McDermott helms the U.K. preem of Philip Glass’ upcoming opera “The Perfect American,” based on Peter Stephan Jungk’s novel imagining the last months of Walt Disney. Originally commissioned by the now troubled New York City Opera, the production opens Jan. 22 at Madrid’s Teatro Real, nine days ahead of Glass’s 75th birthday, with a London opening on June 1, 2013.
The season opens Sept. 13 with a revival of Hytner’s production of Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” designed by Bob Crowley, followed by the U.K. preem of Bohuslav Martinu’s “Julietta” helmed by Jones and based on his hit Paris Opera production.
Rupert Goold (“Enron”) also returns to ENO following his controversial “Turandot,” helming a new production of Berg’s “Wozzeck.” Other legit directors in the season include Michael Keegan-Dolan with a new “Julius Caesar” and Rufus Norris and Deborah Warner with revivals of “Don Giovanni” and “Death in Venice,” respectively.
