Broadway-aimed musical set for October run

The tuner adaptation of 2005 pic “Kinky Boots” has locked in a Chicago tryout this fall, prior to a potential Broadway run targeted for spring 2013.

Based on the U.K.-set Miramax movie about a guy who rescues his family’s shoe factory with the help of a drag performer, the musical has a book by Harvey Fierstein and tunes by Cyndi Lauper in her stage composing debut. Jerry Mitchell (“Legally Blonde”) helms and choreographs.

Show has been in the works for several years now and was recently seen by legiters in a industry reading in Gotham.

Producers Daryl Roth (“The Normal Heart”) and Hal Luftig (“Evita”) have lined up the musical’s trial run at Chi’s Bank of America Theater for October, with exact dates still to be announced. No casting has yet been set.

“Kinky Boots” is the latest Broadway-bound project for Fierstein, soon to be represented on the Rialto with Disney Theatrical Prods.’ “Newsies,” for which he penned the book. Only previous Rialto credit for Lauper is a thesping gig in the 2006 revival of “The Threepenny Opera.”

Dates, theater and other details remain to be announced for the anticipated Broadway run of “Kinky Boots.”
