Broadway tribute for O’Donnell

Memorial will honor late librettist of 'Hairspray'

A memorial service for the late Broadway librettist Mark O’Donnell is set for Monday at 3 p.m. at the Samuel J. Friedman Theater, Manhattan Theater Club’s Rialto venue.

Steve O’Donnell, the late writer’s twin brother and a TV scribe, will participate in the event, as will “Hairspray” alums including songwriters Marc Shainman and Scott Wittman, director Jack O’Brien and producer Margo Lion. Kerry Butler and other members of the “Hairspray” cast will perform at the event, which is open to the public.

Thesps Mia Barron, David Greenspan, Jay O. Sanders and Christopher Evan Welch will perform a one-act by O’Donnell, “There Shall Be No Bottom (A Bad Play for Worse Actors).” Writer Patricia Marx and director Mark Brokaw — helmer of another of musical O’Donnell co-wrote, “Cry-Baby” — also will participate in the event, which also will screen video contributions from John Waters and Jon Stewart.

O’Donnell died in August.
