Actor joins 'Godspell' revival in April
Corbin Bleu will step into the lead role of the Broadway revival of “Godspell,” replacing current topliner Hunter Parrish.
He’ll play Jesus in the Bible-inspired musical, picking up after Parrish departs next month to begin filming the next season of Showtime skein “Weeds.”
“Godspell” reps the second Broadway gig for “High School Musical” star Bleu, who also had a stint in the lead role of “In the Heights.” It’s not clear Bleu will act as a box office draw for “Godspell” since his presence in “Heights” didn’t drive grosses notably upward, but there’s always the possibility he could tap a fanbase he accumulated from his work in the “High School Musical” franchise.
Housed in one of Broadway’s smallest theaters, the revival of “Godspell” has generally posted weekly sales that have fallen on the lower end of the Rialto spectrum, a fact mitigated by the production’s relatively low running costs.
Parrish exits “Godspell” April 15, with Bleu joining the cast April 17.
