Scribes Evan Placey, Sam Pritchard win U.K. legit honors

The Brian Way Award, the £6,000 ($9,600) Brit prize for plays for younger audiences, has been won by Canadian-born, London-based Evan Placey for “Holloway Jones.”

Produced by the Synergy Theater Project, the winning play toured U.K. schools and was presented in London at the Unicorn Theater. Placey’s earlier full-length debut “Mother of Him” won a slew of awards including the King’s Cross Award for New Writing, Canada’s RBC National Playwriting Competition and the Samuel French Canadian Play Contest.

The ceremony at Theater Center, one of the U.K.’s leading companies for young peoples’ theater, also saw the Adrienne Benham Award, a £2,000 ($3,200) seed commission for emerging playwrights, go to Kenneth Emson. The promising young actor award was won by Geraint Rhys Edward.

At a separate event, the annual James Menzies Kitchin Young Director award has been won by 24-year-old Sam Pritchard. His production of “Fireface” by Marius von Mayenburg will be staged at the Young Vic in September. Previous winners include Thea Sharrock (“Equus,” the forthcoming “The Bodyguard”) and Polly Findlay, whose production “Derren Brown — Svengali” this week won the Olivier for top entertainment.
