An all-music homage to composer Antonio Carlos Jobim compiled by Cinema Novo helmer Nelson Pereira dos Santos.
One legend pays tribute to another with “The Music According to Antonio Carlos Jobim,” an all-music homage to the most identifiable Brazilian songwriter of the 20th century, compiled by Cinema Novo helmer Nelson Pereira dos Santos with Jobim’s granddaughter Dora. Jobim’s soft and lovely melodies have been covered by major talent of all stripes, and this compilation gathers 57 performances to showcase his genius. Though the result is slightly too long, few will grumble when offered the chance of basking in these tunes, especially at fests and at home.Jobim’s range was impressive, expanding beyond his famous bossa nova stylings. The gentle swing of melodies (“The Girl From Ipanema,” “Desafinado”) pleasing to hear yet complex to perform, made him a sought-after collaborator (as with Frank Sinatra), and everyone from Dizzy Gillespie to Diane Krall has been covering his rich catalogue since the 1960s. Dos Santos and Dora Jobim, with editor Luelane Correa, use only filmed performances, many from TV shows, occasionally inserting photos or footage of Rio and Brasilia to further capture the period. Lyrics aren’t subtitled, but the expressiveness of the words and music say more than mere translations.
