Fest honors German helmer with retrospective
BERLIN — The Zurich Film Festival is honoring German filmmaker Tom Tykwer (“Cloud Atlas”) with a special “A Tribute to…” award and a retrospective of his work.
Tykwer directed, wrote and produced “Cloud Atlas” with Andy and Lana Wachowski. The centuries-spanning film, which hits theaters this fall, stars Tom Hanks, Halle Barry, Susan Sarandon, Hugh Grant and Hugo Weaving.
Tykwer is co-founder and partner of Berlin-based X Filme. His retrospective will include “Winter Sleepers,” “Run Lola Run,” “Heaven” and “Perfume.” Tykwer will also conduct a masterclass on Sept. 28.
In 2008 he co-founded non-profit organization One Fine Day, which supports artistic education in Nairobi, Kenya, as well as One Fine Day Films, which focuses on producing in the East African region and introducing young African talent to filmmaking.
This year the fest is also feting Richard Gere with its Golden Icon award for lifetime achievement, John Travolta with the Golden Eye for achievement in cinema and Jerry Weintraub with a career achievement award.
