Budget cuts spark exit for a.d.

ROME — U.S. film critic Deborah Young has ankled as artistic director of Italy’s Taormina Film Festival.

During her five years at Taormina’s helm Young boosted the respected Sicily-based fest’s profile, making it a summer showcase for movies from the Mediterranean basin, while also upping its Hollywood star-power wattage with guests such as Robert De Niro, Jessica Lange and Oliver Stone.

Young is stepping down due to differences with the fest’s board, prompted by budget cuts at the Sicilian shindig, which is among Italy’s oldest film events.

Dates have not been announced for Taormina’s 58th edition.
