Woody Allen pic opens top in Italy

'To Rome With Love' pulls $3.7 million

ROME Woody Allen has notched up his best bow in Italy after “To Rome With Love” opened numero uno following its Rome world preem, pulling $3.7 million from a massive 599 screens via Medusa.

Pic, consisting of four non-intersecting vignettes, one starring Roberto Benigni making a rare appearance in a film not directed by himself, pulled in more than the total weekend gross of the five titles that followed it in the box office chart — “Battleship,” “Titanic” 3D, “Street Dance 2,” “Mirror Mirror” and “The Untouchables” — which together took $3.54 million.

The ensemble cast includes Penelope Cruz, Alec Baldwin, Jesse Eisenberg and Allen himself, in his first onscreen appearance since 2006’s “Scoop.”

Per-screen average for “To Rome” was $6,150. The previous top opening take for an Allen pic in Italy was “Midnight in Paris,” which pulled $2.8 million, also via Medusa.

Medusa, a unit of Silvio Berlusconi’s Mediaset, fully financed the approximately $17 million budget of “To Rome,” working with producer Letty Aronson.

Pic lensed in 70 Rome locations. Two of the segments are shot in Italian, while the other two are in English. The version released in Italy was dubbed into Italian.

Sony Pictures Classics will release “To Rome” with English subtitles on June 22, following its North American bow June 14 at the Los Angeles Film Festival. Pic will bow in France in June and in September in Germany.
