Eye on the Oscars: The Director

To convey the dreamy feeling of childhood and its obsession with secret worlds and hidden meaning, Anderson had to painstakingly create every single visual and tableau in his highly stylized coming-of-ager, including the fictitious idyllic New England island of New Penzance, a composite of various Rhode Island locations. The Scout Master’s elaborate tent was built at and furnished from a real Scout Camp, while the detail-oriented Anderson even commissioned artists to design the dust jackets for the stolen books.
