‘Werewolves’ goes to U.K., Korea

Sales mount for Spanish shape-shifter comedy

BARCELONA — Kaleidoscope Ent. has snapped up U.K. rights to Spanish comic fantasy “Game of Werewolves”; Sonamu Pictures has acquired Korean rights.

Deals were closed at the Berlin festival’s European Film Market, said sources at Vertice Sales, the international sales arm of Spanish conglom Vertice 360.

Produced by Spain’s Telespan 2000 and Vaca Films, “Werewolves” is helmed by Juan Martinez Moreno (“Two Tough Guys”).

Set in a remote north-western Spanish hamlet, “Werewolves” sees a wannabe writer returning to his birthplace for inspiration to discover it threatened by a century-old curse.

Deals add to a flurry of other “Werewolves” sales, including licensing pacts to Germany (Senator), Japan (Shochiku), Indonesia and Malaysia (Visicom), and the Middle East (Gulf Film), showing that genre and genre-riffs such as “Werewolves” remain one of Spain’s most potent export staples. It world premiered at October’s Sitges Fest, Europe’s biggest genre confab, where it has critics and the public in stitches.

In November, it took the audience award at the San Sebastian Horror and Fantasy Film Fest.
