Well Go USA nabs ‘Liaisons’

Company gets US rights to Korean helmer Hur Jin-ho's take on classic

Well Go USA will distribute the Mandarin-language version of “Dangerous Liaisons” in the U.S., acquiring Korean helmer Hur Jin-ho’s take on the 18th-century French classic just days ahead of its North American preem Monday night on Toronto’s Gala stage.

Deal was negotiated by Ying Ye, managing director of Easternlight, the Asian arm of Arclight Films with Cassian Elwes on behalf of the film; and Well Go USA prexy Doris Pfardrescher.

The Chinese-Singaporean co-production resets Choderlos De Laclos’ tale of romance and deceit in the gangster world of 1930s Shanghai.

Variety’s review of “Liaisons” from Cannes criticized its play-it-safe approach, but praised its commercial prospects for “possessing all the sophistication of a Korean studio project enhanced by the gilded charm of its period setting.”

Well Go, which expanded its distribution to North America in 2005 and releases five to 10 titles monthly, distributes some English-language titles but has experience finding U.S. auds for Mandarin films. Its two most recent theatrical releases, “Painted Skin 2 : The Resurrection” (August) and “Tai Chi 0” (Oct. 19) are both Mandarin martial arts adventures; company also released Taiwanese historical drama epic “Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale” last year.

Dangerous Liaisons’ is the perfect addition to our ever-expanding slate of diverse and innovative entertainment,” said Pfardrescher in a statement.
