Entertainment One preemed Dustin Lance Black’s “Virginia” on Monday, appropriately on the heels of Mother’s Day, at the Crosby Street Hotel. Pic focuses on a mom in the throes of a schizophrenic episode.
“I grew up very poor with a disabled single parent as a Mormon in the South,” Black revealed.
Pic’s Jennifer Connelly described the title role as “a woman who loves her son so much and throughout her life has tried so hard to give him love, and I think he knows that.”
Billy Bob Thornton attended the screening, as did Juliette Lewis, who entered the theater hand in hand with Gym Class Heroes frontman Travie McCoy.
At the after-party, discussion of President Obama’s support of same-sex marriage came up. Only three weeks ago, Black had criticized the president for his stalled “evolution” on the issue.
“So now I will not only be voting for him, I will be knocking on doors again,” Black said. “And I’ve got to open up my checkbook.”
